Strategic Alignment: Enabling AI-Ready Supply Chains through Collaborative Semantics
Introduction
Modern supply chains rely on the seamless exchange of information across organisations, systems, and countries. However, one of the major barriers to efficient collaboration remains semantic friction — situations where partners use the same terms for different concepts, or different terms for the same process, component, or metric.
These inconsistencies may appear minor, but they often result in manual interventions, integration delays, system incompatibilities, and fragmented data environments. As supply chains become increasingly digitalised and AI-driven, clear and standardised communication is becoming essential not only for human collaboration, but also for machine-to-machine interoperability and intelligent automation.
Within the framework of the SC4EU project, partners are addressing this challenge by developing practical approaches that improve semantic interoperability and support resilient, transparent, and AI-ready European supply chains.
From Ontology Modelling to Practical Implementation
During the second year of the SC4EU project, important progress was achieved by moving beyond theoretical ontology modelling toward a more open, transparent, and user-centric approach for standardised information exchange.
A key outcome was the development and piloting of a Lightweight Vocabulary Collaboration Tool. The solution was designed to bridge the gap between domain experts and digital systems by simplifying the collaborative creation and management of supply chain terminology. Instead of treating semantic alignment as a purely technical task, the tool enables stakeholders to collaboratively establish shared definitions in a scalable and practical way.
Key Technical Achievements
One of the main functionalities implemented within the platform is an Automated Consensus Engine. The workflow supports collaborative discussions and automated voting processes, enabling project partners to efficiently agree on “consensus definitions” for terminology and concepts.
The tool also provides integrated repository access, allowing users to browse and directly integrate terms from established industry standards into project-specific vocabularies through drag-and-drop functionalities.
